Goldfish studies/ Vitamin C and your eyes!

Could goldfish studies save your vision from macular degeneration? Retina’s GABA Receptors May Need Vitamin C to function properly.  According to a study published in the June 29 issue of the Journal of Neuroscience, “gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the retina need ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to function properly.” Working with goldfish, whose retinas are similar in biological structure to human retinas, researchers found that the “function of native retinal and recombinant GABA-C receptors was significantly enhanced in the presence of ascorbic acid…whereas in the absence of ascorbic acid a significant decline in GABA-C receptor function was seen.
